Tim Blackman

Tim Blackman is Professor of Sociology and Social Policy and Acting Vice-Chancellor at The Open University, the UK’s largest university with 200,000 students and a world-leader in echnology-enhanced learning. In July 2015, he takes up the post of Vice-Chancellor at Middlesex University in London.
Professor Blackman received his degree in Geography and PhD in Urban Sociology from Durham University. He has held Chairs in Sociology and Social Policy at several universities as well as leadership roles as dean, research institute director, pro vice-chancellor and vicechancellor. His research has been in the fields of urban policy, social care and health inequalities, with particular interest in evidence-based practice.
Professor Blackman recently led establishing the MK:Smart project, a smart city demonstration programme in Milton Keynes, one of the UK’s top three growth areas outside London. He has worked as a government advisor and is a Fellow of the UK Academy of Social Sciences
